Go Vap 센터를 소개받다
2023년 1월 14일은 아마도 저와 한샘베트남 김일홍법인장에게는 잊기 힘든 날이 될 것입니다. 딸이 다니는 학교를 통해 저는 Go Vap 아동 보호 센터를 소개받았습니다. 이곳은 부모에게 버려진 병든 신생아들을 위한 공간이었습니다. 겉보기에 건강해 보이는 아이들도 이유 없이 이곳에 버려지기도 합니다. 이 아이들이 센터에서 돌봄을 받고 있었습니다. 제 이야기를 전해 들은 김일홍법인장은 다가오는 새해를 맞아 아이들에게 선물을 주고, 한샘베트남의 이름으로 센터에 1,000kg의 쌀을 기부하자고 했습니다.
도움이 필요한 아이들
센터에 도착했을 때 눈앞에 펼쳐진 광경은 상상했던 것보다 심각했습니다. 센터 관리자는 우리를 각 구역으로 안내했는데 아이들의 진단과 치료에 따라 방이 나누어져 있었습니다. 첫 번째 방에 들어서자, 몸보다 머리가 큰 수두증 아이들이 눈을 뜨고 공허하게 바라보고 있는 모습에 순간 위축되기도 했습니다. 관리자로부터 이 아이들은 보통 수명이 약 10년 정도라고 들었습니다. 예전에는 더 많은 아이들이 있었지만, 아이들의 수명이 짧기 때문에 숫자가 줄어 들었다고 한 것이지요. 이 아이들이 오래 살지 못할 것을 알지만, 버릴 수는 없다고 했습니다.
다음 방은 팔다리와 신경 결함이 있는 아이들의 방이었습니다. 어떤 아이들은 낯선 사람을 보고 소리쳤고, 어떤 아이들은 알 수 없는 표정으로 저를 바라보기도 했습니다. 두 번째 방을 지나면서 이 어린 아이들이 겪고 있는 고통에 이미 마음은 너무나 무거웠습니다.
세 번째 방은 선천성 심장병이나 구개열을 가진 아이들이 머물고 있었는데, 이 아이들은 의식은정상이어서 생각하고 반응하는 것은 건강한 사람들과 같다고 합니다. 우리가 사탕을 나누어주자, 두 손으로 받으며 태양처럼 활짝 웃어주어 잠시나마 우리에게 위안이 되었습니다. 아이들과 잠시 어울린 뒤 관리자와 작별 인사를 나누고 센터를 떠났습니다.
우리의 각오
이 날은 마음은 무거웠지만 아이들을 돌보는 센터에 조금이나마 힘을 보태주었다는 생각에 뿌듯하기도 했습니다. 돌아오는 길에 김일홍법인장님은 비슷한 어려움을 겪는 아이들이 있다면 지속적으로 돕자고 말씀하셨습니다. 한샘베트남이 더 성장하면 더 많은 도움을 지역 내 양육 시설이나 기타 돌봄 시설에 지원하자고 하셨습니다. 그는 Go Vap 아동 보호 센터의 관리자로부터 베트남의 여러 보호소와 봉사 단체들에 대해 알게 되었으며, 이는 매우 인도적이고 존경할 만한 활동이라고 생각했습니다. 그는 사람이 어떤 상황에 놓이든지 제대로 살아갈 수 있도록 사회가 도움을 줘야 한다고 생각합니다. 우리는 앞으로 더 많은 단체에 더 많은 도움을 줄 수 있기를 희망하면서 우리의 사회적 참여 활동을 이어가기로 결심했습니다.

Last January 14, 2023, was probably a memorable day for me and Mr. Kim Il Hong, General Director of Hansem Vietnam. Through my daughter’s school, I was introduced to the Go Vap Child Care and Protection Center. It’s a safe haven for sick newborns whose parents have abandoned them at the hospital. Some apparently healthy children are also left here without explanation. These kids are taken in and nurtured by the center. After listening to my story, Mr. Kim, with a heart of compassion and love for children, wanted to visit and give gifts to the children on the occasion of the upcoming New Year and also provide the center with 1,000 kg of rice.
When I got there, the scene that appeared before my eyes was different from what I had initially thought. Their predicaments were more dire than I had imagined. The administration took us on a tour of each section, which was separated according to the children’s various diagnoses and treatments. When entering the first room, everyone was utterly dumbfounded by the children with hydrocephalus, whose heads were larger than their bodies, lying with their eyes open looking into the air. We were told by the guide that these children usually have a life expectancy of about 10 years. In the past, the number was higher, but since some of the children had reached their age limit, the number has decreased. She added that she knew these children wouldn’t live long, but she couldn’t abandon them either.
We then followed her to the room of children with limb and neurological defects. Some children yelled when they saw strangers, while a few looked at me with silly smiles. My heart already felt heavy after going through the second room. In the third room, where children with congenital heart disease or cleft palate lived, these children had the same awareness as any healthy person. When we gave out candy, they accepted with both hands, and their smiles were as bright as the sun, which somehow soothed every one of us in the group. We stayed for a while to play and take souvenir photos with the children, then let them rest. We said goodbye to the management and left.
It had been a day filled with profound significance and tremendous emotion. While we were driving back, Mr. Kim expressed his desire to help children who had experienced similar hardships by donating to foster care and other care facilities. He learned about the many shelters and organizations in Vietnam doing volunteer work of various types from the Go Vap Child Care and Protection Center’s administration, and he found this to be highly humanitarian and honorable. For him, everyone has the right to live no matter what the circumstances. He hopes that Hansem Vietnam will grow more and more to be able to contribute more to charity organizations in Vietnam.
