Efficiently Managing a Large-Scale Translation Project for Advanced MT Engine

In this case study, we explore how Hansem Global successfully managed a large-scale machine translation project for a prominent multilingual translation service, translating over 4 million words across various language pairs within an ambitious three-month timeline. This initiative showcases our sophisticated management and technical capabilities in handling extensive translation volumes under strict deadlines.

We employed various techniques, such as using a social media platform to handle translation inquiries across diverse fields, including legal, economic, daily conversations, culture, and IT.

Project Summary

The client is a leading technology company in South Korea known for its dominant search engine and various digital services. In 2017, they entrusted Hansem Global with a significant project for their proprietary machine translation engine. The task involved translating a large corpus to train the engine, with the source language being Korean and the target languages being French and Spanish. The project required the translation of two million words for each language within a three-month timeframe. Despite the challenges of the large volume and tight schedule, Hansem Global developed efficient and effective processes that ensured high-quality translations, successfully completing the project on time.

Challenges

Resource Management: We needed to source and manage native French and Spanish translators residing in Korea. Given the three-month timeframe, we had to secure over 30 native translators.

Diverse Subject Matter: The documents spanned various domains, including legal, economic, cultural, and IT topics, necessitating translators with specific domain knowledge.

Complex File Management: The project involved managing over 1,000 files, making file organization and tracking complex.

Quality Standards: The translations needed to meet a BLEU score of 60% or lower to ensure quality.

Our Solutions

Efficient Management Techniques
We leveraged our extensive resource management experience to oversee more than 30 native translators in a short period. We employed various techniques, such as using a social media platform to handle translation inquiries across diverse fields, including legal, economic, daily conversations, culture, and IT.

Cloud-based Management System
To efficiently manage over 1,000 translation and proofreading files, we utilized a cloud-based platform that streamlined our work servers and eliminated the need to handle numerous files through email systems. This approach enabled the team to collaborate more efficiently and avoid project delays.

BLEU Score Calculation Method
To meet the requirement of a BLEU score of 60% or lower for MTPE tasks, we introduced our own BLEU score calculation method that incorporated Python and Excel macros (VBA). Our document engineers used this approach to determine the BLEU score of both the original MT results, a corpus of over 27 million words, and the translated/revised content efficiently.

Outcome

Despite the daunting scale and pace of this project, Hansem Global consistently delivered high-quality translations, which in turn reinforced our strong partnership with the client since 2017. Our ability to manage extensive translation tasks efficiently makes us a reliable partner for large-scale projects.
